Benfotiamine has been shown to be more effective than thiamine in preventing diabetic complications, such as neuropathy and nephropathy. This is due, in part, to benfotiamine’s ability to increase intracellular levels of thiamine pyrophosphate, a coenzyme involved in glucose metabolism.
